Thursday, May 21

Hello Everyone!
It was great to see so many of you in our class Zoom yesterday.  Today will be another sunny day so try your best to get outside during your break time.  It might be a great day to read outside in the sunshine.  Please don't forget to email us your math assessment.  We look forward to seeing what you learned in our last math unit.

Here are your distance learning goals for today.

Reading
Please watch the video below where I will read the first half of the book Scranimals. When you are done watching, you'll be creating your own scranimal!

1. Think of an animal. It may be easier if it has more than one syllable.
2. Think of another animal or plant where the name has the same sound as the beginning or ending sounds in your first animal. If my animal was a panda, I could either add something that ends with -pan (saucepanda) or I could add an animal to the end of panda that starts with -da (panduck)
3. If you are stuck... go back to step #1 and try a new animal. (I found it harder to do the first way and much easier to do the second way.)

🦉When you come up with your scranimal, create an illustration of what you think it might look like! Add color and lots of detail :)

Afterward, you can use the rest of the reading time to continue to do free reading. Please fill out the 🦉Reading Log Form after you finish so that we can be kept up-to-date with what awesome books you are reading!

Math
For math today, please watch this video of Module 7 Lesson 1 where you will see Mr. Duane talking you through the main idea of the lesson. You will be starting a unit on geometry and measurement, and you'll be using the RDW approach for your work. As a fourth-grade teacher, I can tell you that drawing pictures is a really important strategy for when my students get stuck. So even if you think you can solve the problems in your head, practice drawing out what you see in your mind. It will help you next year!

🦉After watching the video, please complete the problem set. I will post the answers to the problem set tomorrow. You do not need to do the homework unless you'd like some extra practice. If you finish with extra time, you can play Reflex or Zearn.

Science
Today you will finish the third and fourth page of your Frog Engineering Mini-Book.  Today you will be writing about coloration and camouflage.

Bonus
In your most recent envelope, we sent origami paper.  Here is a tutorial for an origami turtle.
